General Services and Information

Assistance to the Physically Disabled

A Kurzweil machine for the visually challenged, and a TDD system (access via telephone) for the hearing challenged are available on the third floor. Inquire at the Service Desk on the third floor for arrangements to use this equipment. Designated restrooms have been enlarged to accommodate wheelchairs, and specific tables and desks in the Reference Room and in the library classrooms are also designated for patrons in wheelchairs.

Copiers

Copiers are available on each floor of the library. Copies are $0.10; debit cards are available to purchase on the first floor. Copiers accept one and five dollar bills. Problems with copiers are directed to personnel on each floor. Refund slips are then taken to the Circulation desk for refund.

Debit cards

Debit cards may be used in coin-operated copiers throughout campus as well as in microform readers on the third floor. They are available in a dispenser on the first floor of the Library for denominations from $5.00 to $20.00 and may be reused indefinitely. Any problems with debit cards are handled by University Bookstore personnel.

Elevators

Elevators for general use are on the west side of the library on each floor.

Group study rooms

Group study rooms are available on the third and fourth floors. These rooms are available to students of 3 or more on a first-come basis. The room can be used by an individual as long as there is not a request for group studies. Library staff can ask individual to leave the room when there is a group study request. You may also need white board markers, erasers, or SMART board pens available at the third floor service desk.

Library Catalog

The library catalog is available on computers throughout the library, the UTPA campus, and around the world. The catalog lists the books, movies, government documents, etc., that the library owns. It also lists the newspapers, magazines, and journals available from the library, including the years of the subscriptions.

Restrooms

Restrooms are on the southwest side of the library on each floor. Designated restrooms have been enlarged to accommodate wheelchairs.

Staff Work Areas

Staff work areas are restricted to library personnel only.

Stairs

Stairwells for general use are on the southwest and northwest side of the library on each floor. Doors to the stairwells are kept closed for safety reasons.

Study carrels

Study carrels (desks) are quiet areas scattered throughout the Library. These are available on a first-come first-serve basis. The study carrels that line the second and third floors of the west wing are wired for Internet access.

Telephones

A telephone is available on the northwest side of the library on the 1st floor. This phone is for on-campus calls only.

Help Telephones

If you are in need of assistance in locating books a help phone is available on 2nd and 3rd floor West stacks area.

Fire Exits

In case of fire, do not use the elevators; use the stairs to move downstairs and exit the building. Stairwell doors will automatically close, but can be opened easily. Emergency exit doors may be used in case of fire; alarms go off when those doors are opened.
